Milk Men Bottles

Milk Men

I’m about to show you something really cute.
Like super duper cute.
Like one of the cutest things I’ve seen in a while.
It’s so smart and simple – I just can’t stand it.

Snowman Milk Glasses. A perfect mix of winter and whimsey.
Like I said, cute, huh?
You may have seen them already, but in case you haven’t, I couldn’t resist showing you these fantastic ones that my friend Cupcake Julie made the other day.
They were inspired by some that Amy Atlas made on the Today Show after being inspired by Celebrations at Home who was inspired by these from Better Homes and Gardens. (Check them out.)
I can’t wait to make some, too.

I love things like this that have so much impact … and with minimal effort.
You just need:small milk glasses (these from Target work great)
powdered doughnut holes
straws
milk, of course
To decorate, Julie used chocolate jimmies to press into the doughnuts for the eyes and mouth. The noses are orange coated sunflower seeds pressed into the dougnut and attached with a tiny bit of frosting.
She also coordinated their felt scarves with the same color striped straws. And to finish them off, she glued a few small buttons right on the glass.
Adorable!

I want to hug them.
And, then I want to chug them.
Hope you like them as much as I do.
P.S. Happy New Year!

    Pretty Pedestals

    1
Take a look at these beautiful cake stands. That is if you can see past the skyline of sweets. I absolutely love this photo. Love it. I wish I could enlarge it and wallpaper my kitchen with it. This photo and the rest in this post (taken by Ashley Rose Photography) are photos of cakes from my friend Melody’s shop, My Sweet & Saucy. We’ve been internet buds from way back when I had a blogspot.com address. And since then, she’s gone from blogger herself, to superstar baker, making the most gorgeous cakes and working with the likes of Tori Spelling, Miley Cyrus and more. I just wish she wasn’t all the way in California. Actually, it’s a good thing I’m not in driving distance. For my waistline anyway.

Oh dear. I need a pink ruffle cake in my life.
    Pronto.
    5
Look at all these cakes. I mean pedestals. Big ones. Little ones. Tall ones. Short ones.
Melody also has an online store where you can find them all in one place.
Yes, pedestals. Like this pretty little pink one. Perfect for a petite little cake.
    6
Or stack two and you can fill it with sweet little treats.
    2
Wait, you mean you don’t have a large and small pink glass pedestal or a sweet glass dome?
    That’s terrible. Unthinkable.
Would you like one? I mean all three pieces in the photo above?
    I thought you might.
Melody is giving them away to one of my readers. Yippee! Thanks Melody!
Enter for a chance to win this dome and two pretty pink pedestals.

    Tiered Cupcake Stand

    MARCH 23, 2010

    Interchangable Tiered Cake Stand Tutorial

If you’re new here, welcome! I’m AmberLee, and Giverslog is my place to share recipesgift ideaspretty wrapping ideas, and whatever else is on my mind. And if you have a moment, stop by my chocolate shop, The Ticket Kitchen. In the meantime, happy thrifting!
At long last, here is the much-requested thrifted cake stand tutorial. This was a gift I madefor my S-I-L for Christmas, and I’ve been wanting to make one for myself ever since. Of course, in my world, finishing a craft without a deadline is impossible. So I used last week’stea party as the day by which it had to happen.
If you’d rather buy than DIY, head over to Style Garden. She finds the most beautiful pieces and matches them expertly. I’ve actually tried to buy from her myself, but her work is in demand and she was too swamped at the time.  If you want to buy now, you’ll find several in her shop, you lucky duck!
Because my S-I-L is quite the party hostess, I thought I’d like to come up with a version where the plates could be switched out.  You know, like the wristwatch you had in middle school with the interchangeable wrist bands (there are a few of those I’d still like to own). So keep your eyes open for more pretty plates, because you can switch out plates as your parties demand. Any plate with a hole drilled in the middle will do. Or add a tier by using a longer allthread and a few more candlestick segments. It’s all occasion!
So then, if you’re up for a little shopping and assembling, let’s get started.
Shop. First, let’s go shopping, the very fun kind of shopping. This is a good excuse to stop by your favorite thrift stores, flea markets, and houseware shops. Go in search of pieces that will make your heart go pitter pat. Here’s what you’ll need:
    • A drawer pull you think is pretty. For me, this was a good excuse to stop byAnthropologie.
    • An allthread to match, so it will screw into the drawer pull. Pick these up at any hardware store.
    • A bolt and washer that fits, for screwing on at the bottom.
    • Paint, if you so choose.
    • A drill and bit for drilling a hole in the plates (more on this below).
    • A candlestick (or pieces of multiple candlesticks) with a hole through the center. Some have a visible hole, others need to be unscrewed and have the center dowel removed. When in doubt, try unscrewing.
    • A set of plates, melamine or ceramic will do.
I believe the drawer pull cost me $8. Everything else combined totaled a whopping $4.88.
Make sure your allthread and drawer pull are the same width. If your drawer pull has a rod like mine, you should be able to unscrew so the allthread can screw directly into the pull. It took a little torque but we got ours out. Pick up two allthreads if you’re going to want to change between two and three tiers with your cake stand. You’ll need an allthread for each different height.
Remember the hollow candlesticks I picked up for this tutorial? I’ve had no problem finding several every time I thrift. And especially if you’re planning to paint, you can use as many pieces from as many candlesticks as you like.
Paint. Time to get busy. If you’re planning to paint the candlestick, disasemble it and paint.
Drill. Next you’ll need to drill a hole right through the center of the plate. Both times I’ve sent Brent out to the workshop to take care of this for me. Though I do like the chance to use a power tool every now and then. His advice is to use a wood bit for drilling through melamine and a ceramic bit for ceramic. He also suggests picking up an extra plate. That way if one plate cracks a bit, you have a second chance. You can drill a few extra holes in your broken plate and get a little practice. He taped the plate right in the center, then drilled through there.
Assemble. Now you get to thread your whole creation together. Likely the allthread will be too long, so you’ll need to cut it off. If you want to alternate between two and three tiers, make sure you get an allthread that will be the right length for each. Finally, thread the washer on and screw the bolt on the bottom.
And there you have it. A pretty tiered cupcake stand, and an excuse to have everyone over for a party. Once the party’s over, just disassemble and store it flat until the next shindig.

    Picture frame serving tray

    nstructions:
Step 1. head on out to your local thrift store and look for the ugliest frames you can find. The ones you’d never in a million years put in your house. Metal, wood it doesn’t matter just make sure they have a lot of detail.
Step 2. on the way home hit your local hardware store and purchase a can (or two or three depending on your needs) of spray paint in whatever colour you’d like. This is the fun part as there are so many fun colours to choose from now like watermelon or pistachio.
Step 3. once you’re home remove the backing and glass from your frames and set aside.
Step 4. using a very fine sandpaper give your wood frames a little sanding (you won’t need to do this to metal frames).
Step 5. in a well ventilated area spray your frames with the paint to your hearts content. Spray from a few inches away and use a sweeping motion. It’s better to have to go over the frames multiple times than to create drips from too much paint.
Step 6. When the frames are dry you’ve got a few options. You can either put just the clear glass back in or you can put coordinating fabric or scrapbook paper inside (under the glass) for an added touch of fun.

From LindyWhen I originally thought of this idea it was for a dessert table. I thought using different sized frames as stationery serving trays would create a fun punch of color and add texture to the table. I wasn’t able to make a full buffet table for my submission but I have including a couple of pictures with food as an example. You could use one big frame for the wedding cake and smaller frames around it with other treats.

Now with that said…these frames could also be used for seating charts (put main seating chart into frame or each table into a separate frame), or scattered around a buffet table to describe the dishes, or use them around the venue on a thank you table next to gifts or with a picture of the bride and groom next to the guest book…really the possibilities are endless.
