Granpa's snack and pack. Grandpa has a way of taking care of things. If we plan to go out, he packs a backpack for the van, His pack is mediumn in size but it has many pockets and zippered compartments. If anyone gets hungry or thirsty, Granpa's got it covered. Since it basically stays in the van, he packs nonperishable items such as granola bars, raisins, nuts, and peanut butter crackers. We choose items that fit into our healthy eating habits such as wheat crackers.

In the winter, he also packs a small basket tub with water bottles and juices.Two Bananas and an apple and maybe a small baggie of grapes, tops off a very healthy selection of travel foods, because even if you ate just before leaving home, someone will need something, or you will be out longer than you expected.
Another thing he keeps in his pack is two maps. One is a State map and the other local, even if you have a GPS or wireless internet, nothing fails in a map.

He also keeps emergency/ hiking rain jackets,an extra pair of reading glasses, binocculars, a compass, pocketknife, a small first aid kit, and a crank style flashlight.By keeping theses items in the back pack, these items are always accessible in the vehicle but its an easy grab and go for hikes.Since we hike year round, the backpack is always there, like the family pet.ready and waiting for an adventure, but less maintenance. If we hike its there when we return, or we put the drinks in a pouch and take off.
